"Fiscal cliff" tumble looms despite Senate efforts

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States looked on track to tumble over the "fiscal cliff" at midnight on Monday, at least for a day, as lawmakers remained reluctant to back last-minute efforts by Senate leaders to avert severe tax increases and spending cuts.

The U.S. House of Representatives might not vote on any "fiscal cliff" plan before midnight, possibly pushing a legislative decision into New Year's Day, when financial markets will be closed, said a Republican aide.

The Senate plan was heavy on tax increases and light on spending cuts, raising concerns that it would repel rank-and-file lawmakers, particularly in the Republican-controlled House.

As Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and Vice President Joe Biden kept working on unresolved parts of the deal, there was deep discontent among Senate Democrats.

"The caucus as a whole is not sold" on the proposal, said a Senate Democratic aide. "We just don't have the votes for it."

If Congress fails to act, about $600 billion in tax increases and government-wide spending cuts will begin taking effect after midnight, harsh measures that could push the U.S. economy into recession.

But lawmakers could still vote for any deal on New Year's Day and prevent the worst of the fiscal cliff effect.

Under the Senate plan, those with household income above $450,000 or individual income above $400,000 would be taxed at 39.6 percent, up from 35 percent. Those with lower income would be taxed at the current, reduced tax rates put in place under former President George W. Bush.

The aide said Democrats did not like the $450,000 threshold for raising taxes on the rich - they wanted $250,000 - or the higher threshold for raising estate taxes. Democrats also are upset that there is no agreement yet to put off the first round of $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts.

Republicans already are pushing for switching those across-the-board cuts to savings in Medicare and Social Security and threatening to block a debt limit increase in February unless they get their way. But that is a fight that would most likely play out in January and February.

A group of liberal senators met with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to register anger with the deal being negotiated by Biden, and some aides were dispirited that the vice president, a fellow Democrat, had gone further than they wanted, just as he did in December 2010 when all Bush tax cuts were extended for two years.

Shortly after the plan emerged, President Barack Obama said agreement was within sight, but he sounded a cautious note.

"There are still issues to resolve, but we're hopeful that Congress can get it done, but it's not done," Obama, a Democrat, said at a White House event.

U.S. stocks rose on the day, with the market closing before the latest news broke about the House not voting. The benchmark Dow Jones industrial average closed up 1.3 percent at 13,104.

Luxury Yacht Charter Esma Sultan Reminisces Ottoman History ...

One of the most wonderful times during a blue cruise charter are meal times - particularly dinner. After a fulfilling day of play and rest, it's time to wind down and really relax.

One of the most wonderful times during a blue cruise charter are meal times - particularly dinner. After a fulfilling day of play and rest, it's time to wind down and really relax.

One of the most wonderful times during a blue cruise charter are

meal times - particularly dinner. After a fulfilling day of play

and rest, it's time to wind down and really relax. The table in

the aft dining area is decorated with many of the tasty dishes

prepared by the cook or chef of fresh foods that are expected on

luxury gulet cruises. It's a time when everyone gathers for feast

and socializes about their full day of fun and activities,

possibly the plans and itinerary for the next day, and other

conversations, that bring the whole group together for a superb

time.

?

These lovely menus are available usually in two selections. One

is a Standard Gulet menu, while the other offers a bit more

variety and called an Exclusive Gulet menu. Between the two

types of menus on board, guests can enjoy the variety in fresh

and savory Turkish cuisine.

?

Ottoman Cuisine

Unique to many travelers to Turkey are the tastes from the

ancient world - the authentic tastes of Turkey, from the Ottoman

era. The dishes are rich and delicious, displaying all the

creativity of the chefs who make them. The Ottoman menu is a

complete culture in itself. There were more one cook back then in

the palaces.

?

Each cook prepared daily meals belonging to several separate

classes. With two main kitchens in the palace; in addition to

these cooks were approximately 300 more cooks, referred to by

their specialties such as tatl?c? (sweet maker), bal?k?? (one who

prepared f?sh),hamurcu (who dealt with dough/baked goods).

Therefore the Ottoman menus are vast - even to this day.

?

Now going back to Turkish gulet blue cruises, just about all the

chefs or cooks on board these elegantly crafted yachts generally

prepare a Standard or Exclusive menu. However, the Esma Sultan

features an Ottoman menu. The chef is brought on board for

cruises, where the guests have requested an Ottoman menu instead

of the other known ones. This concept on board was brought

forward by the owner who holds a great passion for excellent

hospitality and fine cuisine from the Ottoman era.

?

For travelers who have made this choice in dining and dishes, and

for those who really wish to feel the presence of being in

Turkey, rather than taking a trip in order to indulge in these

fine tastes in Istanbul or elsewhere in Turkey; why not take this

rare opportunity normally not offered or found on other blue

cruises in Turkey.

?

The luxury gulet charter Esma Sultan is 38 meters in length. She

provides 7 well designed and comfortable cabins to accommodate 14

special guests. The guest cabins comprise of one master, four

double cabins and two twin cabins. Each cabin is fitted with air

conditioning as well as en suites. Major ports the Esma Sultan

serves are Gocek, Fethiye, Marmaris and Bodrum. She is also fully

equipped to travel open seas and long distances as far as Croatia

and Cyprus.

?

If you have an adoration for unique tastes and looking to

experience the authentic flavors of Turkey, booking a cruise on

board the Esma Sultan luxury yacht charter might just be the

complete cultural savoir-faire for your journey at sea in

Turkey.

iPad Dominates Tablet Market, Google Nexus Increases Share

Apple's tablet accounts for 87 percent of North American web traffic.

Apple's iPad remained the dominant tablet during December, but Google's Nexus slate and Amazon's Kindle Fire increased their market share.

Online advertising firm Chitika examined North American tablet impressions on its advertising network, with the latest report collecting "tens of millions of tablet impressions" gathered from December 8 to December 14.

Apple's lineup of the iPad generates 87 percent of North American web traffic, while the Kindle Fire slate enjoyed the largest increase. Amazon's tablets accounted for 4.88 impressions per 100 iPad impressions, equivalent to a 4.25 percent share of "all tablet web traffic as a whole."

Impressions generated by the Kindle Fire increased by 20 percent from the 3.57 percent share it settled for a month earlier. Elsewhere, Samsung's Galaxy tablets and Google's own devices including the Nexus 7 also "experienced a usage share increase, albeit less impressive than the Kindle Fire."

During the aforementioned period, Samsung's devices saw their impressions increase from 2.36 percent to a 2.65 percent of North American tablet traffic. The Nexus slate increased its share from a 0.91 percent hold in November to 1.06 percent in December, which represents a 15 percent month-to-month growth.

The full list of tablets ranked by average tablet impressions per 100 iPad impressions is as follows:

  • Amazon Kindle Fire: 4.88
  • Samsung Galaxy Tablets: 3.04
  • Google Nexus Tablets: 1.22
  • Asus Transformer: 0.93
  • Barnes & Noble Nook: 0.91
  • BlackBerry PlayBook: 0.80
  • Acer Iconia: 0.76
  • Toshiba Thrive: 0.60
  • Motorola Xoom: 0.59
  • Other Android Tablets: 0.45
  • Microsoft Surface: 0.22
  • HP TouchPad: 0.18

Improve Your Own Book Promotion Events By Attending Other ...

Debbie Young with author Sarah Lefanu

With writer Sarah Lefanu (right) at my own book launch last October

To help you get the best results from your own book launches and book promotion events, it?s a good idea to attend as many as you can of other authors? public appearances. Even those working in a completely different genre from yours will be able to give you ideas of effective ways to present and promote your book. You may also pick up tips on what not to do!

Finding Author Events Near You

Attending author events ?need not be costly or difficult. Although some literary festival ticket prices can be pricey, there are plenty of free talks if you know where to look. Your local bookshop and public library are great places to start. Special interest groups in your community, such as history societies or hobby groups, also often invite writers in to speak to their members, because they are assumed to be experts in their field.

I?ve been to some super local book promotion events and learned a lot from some brilliant writers whom otherwise I?d never have met:

Sarah Duncan, Romantic Novelist

Sarah Duncan, best-selling romantic novelist

(Photo: from her website)

Best-selling romantic novelist and creative writing teacher Sarah Duncan gave an inspiring talk in Chipping Sodbury Public Library, just as I was starting to research my book promotion handbook for authors, Sell Your Books!?Having met her in person gave me the introduction I needed?to contact her later in the process for further information. I?d only read one of her books before the event, but I quickly worked my way through the rest of them as a result of her talk. Don?t forget, good book talks sell books!

John Hegley in action

John Hegley, ?Poet

The outwardly anarchic, inwardly genius performance poet John Hegley gave two talks at another nearby public library in Yate. One was for adults, the other was a children?s poetry workshop, and I attended the first one by myself, the second with my nine-year-old daughter. At each event, the poet unwittingly provided me with a masterclass in how to work a room ? he had us all enthralled. Although his performance is supremely assured, I wonder whether there?s less confidence inside, because he hadn?t brought a single copy of any of his books to sign or sell. The closest he came to being commercial was to sell photocopied signed copies of his latest poem in typescript, with all the money going to charity. (He gave copies to the children for free.) Touched by his generosity and modesty, I probably ended up buying more of his books online the minute I got home than I would have done from a stall at his talk. (Or maybe that was his strategy!)

Artemis Cooper, Biographer of Patrick Leigh Fermor

Artemis Cooper, biographer of travel writer Patrick Leigh Fermor, at a booksigning event in Gloucestershire

Artemis Cooper at her recent book talk in Gloucestershire (photo by me!)

The most recent local author event I attended was by Artemis Cooper about her new biography of travel writer Patrick Leigh Fermor. This was organised by the nearby Yellow-Lighted Bookshop, whose proprietor has an uncanny knack for booking talks by writers just before their books are chosen by BBC Radio 4 to be Book Of The Week, as this one was last autumn. This was a more unusual venue ? what?s known as the ?Three-In-One? parish church in Horsley, Gloucestershire ? not named after the Holy Trinity as I first assumed, but after its triple role as village church, village school hall and bookable public venue, hence the religious setting in the photos.

From Artemis Cooper, I gained a reminder of the power of personal warmth and charm at what can be impersonal events. She was kind, courteous, respectful to all who attended, making us each feel that she was there only for us. Not surprisingly, she sold many signed copies of her books to just about every member of the audience, a lot of them even before she had given her talk. Actually, starting to sell books before the talk was a very smart idea: it gave people two opportunities and more time to be sold to! The timing was also ideal for making multiple sales per guest: it was in the run-up to Christmas, so people were snapping up signed copies to give as gifts.

Artemis Cooper giving her book talk

Careful use of slides provided atmosphere without distracting from her speech (photo by me)

One aspect of her talk that surprised me was that she read it, word for word, from a script. Even a top authority on a subject like her is not always confident about talking off the top of their head. It is a particularly tricky thing to do if you?re restricted to a specific length of time, as she was (she had a train to catch back to London). I?ve seen Michael Palin several times at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, speaking brilliantly off the cuff about his latest book, but each time he?s overrun and had to talk very fast for the last ten minutes in order to reach his conclusion! Even for the most practised authors, it?s a tricky art.

My daughter's handwriting, inspired by Artemis Cooper's signature

What my daughter gained from Artemis Cooper?s book talk: a new respect for beautiful handwriting!

Another great joy of Artemis Cooper?s talk was to watch her mastery of the mechanics of book signing. She has beautiful handwriting and uses a carefully chosen pen to provide the necessary flourish. I had to take my nine-year-old daughter with me to the event, for lack of a babysitter, and I?d come with a bag of things to keep her amused during the talk. In the event, she spent the whole hour sitting practicising her handwriting, so inspired was she by watching Artemis Cooper at work! She also appreciated the excellent cake ?and fancy squash provided by the?Yellow-Lighted Bookshop?- themselves past masters in the art of winning the hearts and minds of the book-buying public!

I?ll add more examples on this theme in the New Year, including the?tale of one children?s author?s public appearance involving the unlikely components of an Oxfam shop and a town crier, and the imminent visit of bestselling author M C Beaton of Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin fame to our wonderful library at Yate. Never underestimate your local library!

What have YOU learned from other authors? book talks? Do feel free to share your experience via the Comments section below!

2010 Baseball Hall Of Fame Program ?Memories And Dreams? With Andre Dawson, Whitey Herzog, and Doug Harvey

2010 Baseball Hall Of Fame Program ?Memories And Dreams? With Andre Dawson, Whitey Herzog, and Doug Harvey

With the exception of a few baseball books that I may call attention to at a later date, this is the final baseball-themed Christmas gift that I will be showing off on the blog.

This time around, I kind of fed the idea to my wife through Ebay?s ?EMail to a friend? system.? I had seen that a seller had listed these for a very affordable price, and I had been waiting for one to present itself affordably.

Well, she took the bait (and the idea) and I am now the proud owner of the program that was sold at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony of Andre Dawson, Whitey Herzog, and Doug Harvey.

Have a look:

DAWSON MEMORIES AND DREAMS

This piece accompanies my 2010 Hall of Fame yearbook very well, and now there is just one commemorative program from that event that I am missing for my collection.? Hopefully, in time, I too can bring that home for a price that works for me.

You know what comes next, right?

Of course, you do!? Just a matter of time before I send this off to Mr. Dawson with the hopes if adding?his autograph.

Thanks for reading.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Priscilla Meza, a former Watsonville High and Cabrillo College player, is trying out for the Mexican national team this week at Centro de Alto Rendimiento in Mexico City.

A 5-foot-9 midfielder and defender, Meza tried out for representatives from Mexico two months ago in San Jose and was extended an invitation to tryouts on April 21.

Things are going well for Meza, her personal coach Hillel Rom said Thursday, noting Meza will travel with the team for a short tour of Japan next week. Meza will return to Watsonville on May 12.

"I think she's got a better shot at making this team than she did the last one," said Rom, referring to Meza's tryout with FC Gold Pride last year. "She's tall, taller than most girls in Mexico, she's strong, has a great shot and is a year older."

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

St. Francis High senior Jacob Miller, a standout running back and linebacker who was named to the 2009 Sentinel All-County team, has committed to play at University of Redlands next season. Redlands is an NCAA Division III program.

More Lessons from Grandma on Green Building and House Design ...

Aymar Embury II/Public Domain

Some commenters were not impressed with the post Lessons Green Builders Can Learn From Michael Pollan, where I modified Michael Pollan's Food Rules to green building. In particular, the rule Don't eat build with anything that your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food a building material started a big debate about whether Grandma knew best.

Martin Holladay of Green Building Advisor was particularly critical, noting that his grandma's house was very green but not very nice:

Old houses are charming and have many virtues. My grandmother grew up in a sod house in South Dakota; it was very, very green. Every winter, her job was to bank the walls with fresh manure, in hopes that the feeble heat of the composting manure would reduce some of the chill that the occupants faced when the prairie winds entered through the window cracks.

I can see his point, but much depends on the Grandmother. I can't show my grandmother's house, as it was knocked down to build this gorgeous Stephen Teeple number, but it was rather nice. Etta R. Speyer was one of the first woman real estate agents in Canada and knew how to pick them, and my mom, an interior decorator, did a very contemporary renovation and addition, turning it into a duplex. I grew up there, and learned a lot about both traditional and mid-century modern design from it. Martin's comments made me wonder what else we could learn about house design from Grandma and her contemporaries, beside from using manure as insulation.

I have my mom's copy of Architect Aymar Embury II's "The Livable House: Its Plan and Design" from 1917. (He later became Robert Moses's architect of choice and supervised over six hundred public projects in New York City) In it, he describes what he called houses "built by people of moderate incomes, who cannot afford to build houses of great size, or of extravagant materials." Nonetheless they were houses for professional people who could afford architects, unlike most houses at the time that were built by carpenters or contractors. Embury wrote:

A competent architect can get a little more room out of the same space than the carpenter or untrained house builder. He can so arrange the rooms that housekeeping is a little easier, and he can see that the materials employed are durable and sound.

So how did they arrange the rooms? I looked into Embury's book to see what he considered to be good houses of the day, and what they included. These are not working class houses; they are for the 1% of the time, who could afford to buy empty lots and hire architects. Yet they are very different from the houses of today.

Aymar Embury II/Public Domain

Perhaps most surprising is how tight and efficient they are. Heating was very expensive, so one didn't waste a lot of space. According to Embury, the most modern heating at the time was ducted air, but it wasn't forced air like it is today, they had huge ducts and relied on convection for circulation. Larger houses would have hot water or steam radiators, which was much more expensive. There were living rooms and dining rooms but few dens and no family rooms; you lived in the living and ate in the dining. Period. There was not a lot of space devoted to expansive two storey halls and breakfast rooms and all those things that fill up so much space in a modern house.

Main floor toilets were rare, but everyone in this class had servants, and servant stairs were almost universal, as were kitchen pantries. Even in my own Toronto house, built on a 30' lot in a streetcar suburb of Toronto 90 years ago, there was a servant's stair that ran from near the kitchen to mid-landing so that the help wouldn't be seen in the front hall, horror of horrors. The previous owners ripped it out and put in a powder room.

On the second floor, many of the homes had two bathrooms, but closets are tiny. Today, I believe the rule is that that closet should be as big as the bedroom. Yet somehow they managed; perhaps the help took it all away for storage somewhere else. Every bedroom had at least two windows to provide natural cross-ventilation, the bathrooms had opening windows, never over the tub where you couldn't reach it. The hall had natural light as well; electricity was expensive and unreliable.

As the houses got bigger and jazzier, they got some of the things that we expect today, like ground floor powder rooms and even ground floor dens, but look at the sizes; the dining room is 14' by 14' and the den is 8' x 11', barely the size of a closet by today's standards. There's only one bathroom on the second floor, but it is generous. There is also a sleeping porch for hot summer nights. But generally, it is smaller, tighter and more efficient than anything anyone would build today.

The exteriors are as interesting as the plans. Note the projecting second floor and the trellises shading the windows, the deciduous trees planted to shade the house, the big casement windows to allow the breezes in.

Or note the amazing pergola running round the Calvert House here, creating lovely outdoor space and shading the house in summer.

In the end, what have we done with all that wonderful insulation and air conditioning and green tech developed since Grandma's day? We've eaten up much of the energy savings by having house size get out of control. We've complicated our designs as if we wanted to maximize jogs and surface areas. We've introduced double height spaces and media rooms and family rooms and breakfast rooms and ensuite bathrooms for every bedroom. We have forgotten about orientation and cross-ventilation because we can just turn on the air conditioning. We get rid of asbestos and lead in paint and don't question brominated flame retardants and phthalates.

I'm sorry, but we still have a lot to learn from Grandma and her architect.

vvslaxman25: Publishing Your eZine the Cons | My life - mlyvyn's ...

As with any other types of businesses, publishing your own online newsletter a.k.a. eZine has its share of drawbacks, in spite of the several benefits it offer.

The purpose of this article is not to scare you away with the disadvantages of publishing your own eZine, as the benefits are often more attractive. However, I will also show you how you can easily tackle the cons.

One obvious challenge most beginning eZine publishers face is the creation of eZine content. Creating your own content can be tiresome, especially if you are not a gifted writer and that you run out of ideas every so often that your publishing schedule is threatening you.

A way of taking care of this problem is to create your content in advance. You can compile 30 days worth of content in one day, for example. If you are not blessed with writing skills, you can broker the writing task to capable freelance writers which you can find at places such as http://www.elance.com/ or http://www.rentacoder.com/. While you need to pay for such services, you are at liberty to take the credit for written articles.

Alternatively, you can republish articles from article directories such as http://ezinearticles.com/. This is a free method you can use in making content, provided you include the resource box of the original author and that the article has republishing rights conveyed.

In conclusion, you can easily tackle the content creation challenge using the mentioned methods that do not require writing on your part, free or paid.

Assad officials in Moscow to discuss end to civil war

By NBC News wire reports

BEIRUT --?Syrian President Bashar Assad dispatched senior diplomats to Moscow on Wednesday to discuss proposals made by international?envoy Lakhdar Brahimi to end the?21-month-old?conflict gripping Syria, Syrian and Lebanese sources said.?

Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad and Assistant Foreign Minister Ahmad Arnous flew early Wednesday to Moscow, airport officials in Beirut told The Associated Press. The men hope to sound out Russian officials on details discussed with Brahimi earlier this week in Damascus.

Brahimi is trying to arrange a peaceful transfer of power, but has disclosed little about how this might be achieved.?Opposition sources have staunchly rejected any solution that would leave President Bashar Assad and his government in power.

"We have told every official we have met: the government and its president cannot stay on in power, with or without their powers. This is unacceptable to Syrians," wrote Moaz Alkhatib, the head of the opposition's National Coalition, on his Facebook page on Monday.

"The coalition leadership has told Lakhdar Brahimi directly that this type of solution is rejected."

On Monday, Brahimi said that the situation was "worrying" and gave no indication of progress toward a negotiated solution for the civil war.

In Syria's Aleppo, 'We're starving. I can bear it but what about my children?'

Brahimi is scheduled to go to Moscow before the end of the month.

ITV's Emma Murphy spoke with Syrian refugee women in Jordan who described harrowing, brutal treatment.

'A new mood'
Brahimi's previous proposal centered on a transitional government that left open Assad's future role, something which became a sticking point between the government, the opposition and foreign powers backing different sides.

However, a Lebanese official close to Assad's government said Syrian officials were upbeat after talks with the envoy, who met Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moualem on Tuesday.

"There is a new mood now and something good is happening," the official said, asking not to be named due to the sensitivity of the issue. "Of course now they (Syrian officials) want to meet with their allies to discuss these new developments."

Channel Four Europe's Alex Thomson has the rare opportunity to meet some of Syrian President Bashar Assad's troops.

More than 44,000 Syrians have died in the revolt against four decades of Assad family rule, a conflict that began with peaceful protests but which has descended into civil war.

Israel: No proof chemical weapon was used in?Syria

The last several days have seen some of the heaviest fighting for three months. On Wednesday, rebels re-launched their assault on the Wadi Deif military base in the northwestern province of Idlib, in a critical battle for a major army base and fuel storage and distribution point.

Activist Ahmed Kaddour said rebels were firing mortars and had attacked the base with an explosives-rigged vehicle.

As violence has intensified in recent weeks, with Assad using his air power and artillery to contain rebel advances, daily death tolls have climbed. At least 190 were killed across the country on Tuesday alone, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Assad's key ally Russia says it's 'not concerned' about his fate

Also Wednesday, the head of Syria's military police changed sides and declared allegiance to the anti-Assad revolt.

"I am General Abdelaziz Jassim al-Shalal, head of the military police. I have defected because of the deviation of the army from its primary duty of protecting the country and its transformation into gangs of killing and destruction," the officer said in a video published on YouTube.

A Syrian security source confirmed the defection, but said Shalal was near retirement and had only defected to "play hero."

Imperial scientists will receive 4.5 million public funds to investigate how 'super material' graphene can drive improvements in high-tech industry

Scientists at Imperial College London are set to receive over 4.5 million of public funding to investigate how the 'super material' graphene can drive improvements in high-tech industries, such as aerospace design and medical technologies.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne MP, today announced 21.5 million of capital investment to commercialise graphene, one of the thinnest, lightest, strongest and most conductive materials to have been discovered, marked by the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics as one of the world's most ground breaking scientific achievements.

Three research projects at Imperial will share the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funding as part of a new programme with a number of industrial partners, including aeroplane manufacturer Airbus. The scientists receiving the grant hope to develop graphene technologies that will contribute to the UK economy and can be applied by industries around the world.

Professor Neil Alford, deputy principal for research in Imperial's Faculty of Engineering, who is playing a key role in one of the new projects, said: "This is a tremendous opportunity for UK science and industry. The new funding will enable us to bring graphene a step closer to useful applications, by helping us explore the physical and mechanical properties of this remarkable material, as well as its behaviour at high frequency."

In one project worth 1.35 million, led by Professor Tony Kinloch from the Department of Mechanical Engineering with colleagues from the Departments of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, researchers will explore how combining graphene with current materials can improve the properties of aeroplane parts, such as making them resistant to lightning-strikes. They hope the same technology can also be used to develop coatings for wind-turbine blades, to make them scratch resistant and physically tougher in extreme weather conditions.

Professor Eduardo Saiz, from the Department of Materials, will develop new manufacturing processes using liquids that contain tiny suspended particles of graphene, in order to reduce the cost of currently expensive industrial techniques. This project will receive 1.91 million funding and involves scientists from Imperial's Departments of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and Queen Mary, University of London.

1.37 million of funding received by Professor Norbert Klein, also from the Department of Materials and shared with Imperial's Department of Physics, will pay for new equipment to deposit extremely thin sheets of graphene, so scientists can explore its electrical properties. They hope that new medical scanning technology may be developed as a result of how graphene responds to high frequency electromagnetic waves, from microwave to terahertz frequencies and all the way to the wavelengths of visible light.

Professor Alford said: "At Imperial we will use the funding to build on first class research that crosses several College departments to vastly improve current technologies such as catalysis, supercapacitors, membranes, multifunctional polymer and ceramic composites and a whole range of applications at microwave and optical frequencies. We will work on improving the mechanical properties of composite materials, and addressing the electrical properties of devices, to develop exceptionally sensitive sensors for a range of applications in environmental monitoring and the medical sciences."
