ConnectedLiving: Equipping Older Adults to Be Computer Literate ...

ConnectedLiving: Equipping Older Adults to Be Computer Literate

Before Computers

Prior to having computers in society, some everyday tasks could be viewed as more difficult or time consuming. Without a computer or Internet connection, you would not be reading this article and the Chicago Bridge blog would not even exist. Before computers, some tasks may have taken longer to do, such as paying bills, finding directions ?and/or writing papers for class or work.

The Need for Computer Access and Education

For an older adult, the burden or challenge of some of these tasks may be eliminated through use of a computer. For example, sending birthdays ?cards to grandchildren or children may be easier through email if the older adult has arthritis or shaky hands challenging their handwriting abilities. It may also be easier to get in touch with grandchildren who are more likely to be communicating via email. At the beginning of the ConnectedLiving older adult computer classes at Rush University, we as facilitators always ask older adult students what they would like to get out of the program. In response, at least one or two students say a goal is to stay in touch with grandchildren through email and the Internet.

In addition, older adults would arguably?benefit from using a computer as a method of filling out the many forms they face including Medicare related forms, Circuit Breakers, Medicaid forms, etc.

What is ConnectedLiving?

ConnectedLiving is a company founded in 2007 that works to connect families and older adults through technology and the Internet. They bring Internet and computer knowledge to those who otherwise would not have such access. ConnectedLiving provides training software and curriculum. The ConnectedLiving staff train the trainers who will work with participants and also train the participants themselves.

ConnectedLiving uses a special secure network consisting of email, the internet, games, music, and a calendar all in one program. They have many partnerships in senior communities including Rush University Medical Center, Brookdale Senior Living, Atlanta Housing Authority, Boston Housing Authority, District of Columbia Housing Authority, a senior apartment building in Oak Park, IL and many others.

Rush University?s ConnectedLiving Program

Rush University Medical Center offers basic classes in how to use the ConnectedLiving network which includes teaching participants how to scroll, use a mouse, turn the computer on and off, sign in and out from their account, use email, Internet, play games, find health information and much more!

There are two main coordinators and several volunteers that help facilitate the class at Rush University and all of them are friendly, patient, and empowering. Rush University Medical Center received a grant as part of ?Getting Illinois Low Income Seniors and People with Disabilities? online which ConnectedLiving implemented in Illinois with help from the Department of Commerce?s BTOP (Broadband Technology Opportunities Program). If a participant has perfect attendance and passes the assessment given at the end of the program, they may be eligible for a free refurbished computer provided that they purchase broadband.

If you know an older adult who would be interested in participating in ConnectedLiving, they can contact MaryLou Tomecek Baker, coordinator of the ConnectedLiving program at Rush at (312) 942-2053.

Improving Confidence

Many participants start Rush University?s ConnectedLiving program excited and a little nervous. They are sometimes afraid if the wrong button is pressed they might ruin the computer but they shortly overcome this fear. By the end of the program, participants are using the computer as if they had been using it their whole life. One participant so enjoyed the program that she went one step further and purchased a Kindle Fire so she could always be connected to technology.

Computer Literacy for Older Adults

According to a study by The Pew Charitable Trust published in The Chicago Tribune, as of 2008, only 35% of older adults 65 or better were using the Internet. This is a 5% increase from 2006. Of course this number could be much higher.

Several of the participants in the Rush ConnectedLiving program reported that they, ?did not want to be left behind? when it came to computers and technology. They want to be able to keep up with things that are happening in the world and the computer is one way they can do that besides using the TV or radio. Computer use may also help those who have health or physical challenges providing access to disease management programs online or connect with others online if they are lonely or isolated.

Available Programs for Older Adult Computer Instruction

Although there are some computer literacy programs available, I believe there is a large need for additional classes and instruction for older adults. There are many older adults who are willing and eager to learn and several places in Chicago and beyond that provide it. Each program is unique and it is important to find the one that works for each individual. Several participants in the Rush ConnectedLiving program have tried other programs before coming to Rush and have experienced more success with Rush?s program.

  • Several senior centers in Chicago provide computer classes as well as Rush University Medical Center. One location is the West Side Health Authority?s Community Technology Center in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago which provides 10 week classes in the basics of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Computer classes are also available?at The Beverly Arts Center in Chicago as listed on the Chicago Bridge Creative Aging resource list.
  • Pace University in New York provides computer classes for older adults and the classes are seven weeks. The founder of this program was computer science professor.

Important Resource for Older Adults

Because technology is such a large important?part of society today, it is vital that there are accessible programs to teach older adults basic computer skills. ConnectedLiving is one example that helps to do this by teaching skills such as navigating the Internet, using email, playing games online, and using YouTube videos. ConnectedLiving assist older adults to become computer literate. It helps make tasks like paying bills easier and keeping in touch with grandchildren simpler as well as increases the number of older adults who are computer literate.

Facebook Ups The Mobile Ante Again; Buys Mobile Loyalty, Rewards Startup TagTile

tagtile-renderingThis just in: Facebook has closed another deal, and as with Instagram it's in mobile again. They have bought TagTile, a mobile-based customer loyalty, management startup, for an undisclosed sum. After the $1 billion, 40-million user blockbuster of Instagram, this looks like a return to the smaller, acqhire buys that Facebook is more known for making. ?We?re happy to confirm that TagTile?s founders are joining Facebook, and that Facebook is acquiring substantially all of the company?s assets. We?ve admired the engineering team?s efforts for some time now and we?re excited to have them join Facebook," the social network said in an emailed statement.

Syrian troops holding fire after dawn deadline

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian troops held their fire in the hours after a U.N.-backed ceasefire took effect at dawn on Thursday, casting a silence over rebellious towns they had bombarded heavily in recent days.

But the lull did little to convince opposition activists and Western powers of President Bashar al-Assad's good faith in observing a peace plan agreed with international envoy Kofi Annan. In defiance of that deal, Syrian troops and tanks were still in position inside many towns, activists told Reuters.

"It was a bloody night. There was heavy shelling on the city of Homs. But now it is calm, and there is no shooting," said Abu Rami, an activist in Syria's third city after the 6 a.m. (11:00 p.m. Eastern Time) deadline passed. Assaults on restive neighborhoods had become more intense after Assad accepted Annan's timetable.

At the United Nations, Annan will brief the deeply divided Security Council at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Western powers, though hesitant to intervene militarily, are lobbying Russia, a key ally for Assad, to drop its veto on other U.N. measures to pressure Syria into abandoning four decades of autocratic rule by the his family.

The 13-month crisis has pushed out pressure waves along a web of faultlines across the Middle East, pitting Sunni Arabs against Shi'ite Iran, and alarming Turkey, whose prime minister on Thursday cited his country's right to call on its NATO allies to defend a border where Syrian troops opened fire this week.

People contacted by telephone in the flashpoint provinces of Homs, Hama and Idlib, which have been under sustained shelling by Assad's forces over the past week, reported calm. An activist in Damascus said the capital was also quiet.

"More than two hours have passed, and it's completely quiet across the country," said Rami Abdulrahman, director of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The Syrian government bars access to most independent media.

Like activists in other cities, the man who uses the cover name Abu Rami said there was no indication troops were withdrawing from Homs in accordance with the agreement.

"There are no signs of a pull-back; the tanks, snipers and armed forces are still visible across the city," he said.

DIPLOMATIC BATTLE

British Prime Minister David Cameron, speaking after the lull was reported, said Assad was failing to abide by the terms endorsed by the U.N. Security Council last week: "I feel an immense sense of frustration because the world has come together behind this Kofi Annan plan," he told the BBC.

"This is a plan, remember, that is not just backed by those of us who have been pushing for action on Syria, it's also backed by China and Russia. And yet Assad is deliberately flouting it."

In an indication of how the Western leaders who intervened to help rebels topple Muammar Gaddafi in Libya last year are reluctant to do likewise in Syria, Cameron made it clear that the main thrust of Western efforts would be to persuade Moscow and Beijing to accept tighter punitive sanctions.

"Now is the time to say to the Russians and Chinese, look at the man we are dealing with, look at the appalling way he is behaving," Cameron said. "We need to go back to the U.N. and tighten the pressure, tighten the noose."

The opposition Syrian National Council is also lobbying for a strong international ultimatum to Assad if the peace fails.

Russia and China, alarmed by the way last year's Security Council resolution on Libya led to military intervention against a sovereign state, have vetoed attempts to penalize Assad, although the United States, European Union and Arab League have imposed their own economic and political sanctions.

China's Foreign Ministry called on the opposition to honor the truce, something the disparate rebel movements have said they are willing to do - although Western leaders and Annan's team have made clear the onus is firstly on the government.

"China welcomes the government's relevant decision, which will help to ease tensions," the ministry said in a statement. "China also calls on the Syrian armed opposition to immediately cease fire and implement Annan's six-point proposal."

TROOPS STILL IN CITIES

Annan has said he has Syrian assurances that the ceasefire would be respected, though his spokesman was at pains on Wednesday to stress that other elements of his plan must also be respected - notably "Item 2", which calls for armed forces to withdraw from the vicinity of urban areas.

Syria's Defense Ministry said on Wednesday it would halt operations on Thursday morning but made no mention of an army pullback from cities and said it would confront "any assault" by armed groups. Attacks on opposition neighborhoods over the last week have fuelled doubts it would comply with the truce.

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, said the commitment could not be construed as complying with the former U.N. secretary-general's peace plan: "The burden remains squarely on the Syrian regime and not the opposition in the first instance to meet its obligations in full and visibly under the Annan plan," Rice told reporters late on Wednesday.

"The caveats in the letter are worrying and yet again cast into doubt the credibility of any such commitments. But nothing casts more doubt on the credibility of the commitments than the fact that commitments have been made and made and made and broken and broken and broken," she said, noting that attacks had intensified since Assad agreed to the plan two weeks ago.

Syria's U.N. ambassador, Bashar Jaafari, said his government was "on board" with the plan. But, he said on U.S. television, government forces would remain on alert to "counterattack" and that "legally speaking, there is a big difference between declaring a ceasefire and putting an end to the violence".

The opposition was also sceptical of Assad's intentions.

"The Defense Ministry announcement is a detour on Annan's plan, which clearly says he should pull back the tanks and end violence. We will wait until tomorrow and see. We will not act before tomorrow," Qassem Saad al-Deen, Free Syrian Army spokesman inside Syria, told Reuters on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Annan said an advance planning team that had been negotiating how U.N. observers would monitor the accord had left Damascus after a week. Its leader, Norwegian general Robert Mood, told Norway's NTB news agency he was "cautiously optimistic" but that there remained considerable difficulties.

"Both sides are plagued by a very high degree of mutual suspicion," Mood said. "It's terribly difficult for them to cross that abyss." A veteran of peacekeeping missions in the Middle East, Mood said he had mainly spoken to Syrian officials.

TURKEY CITES NATO

Turkey, hosting nearly 25,000 Syrian refugees, has been particularly alarmed, and Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan raised the prospect of engaging its NATO allies to protect its borders after firing from Syria hit people in a refugee camp this week.

"NATO has responsibilities to do with Turkey's borders," he was quoted as saying by Hurriyet newspaper on Thursday, citing Article 5 of the North Atlantic defense pact, which allows for a common response to an attack on the territory of a member state.

Ankara has urged the Security Council to adopt a resolution that would protect the Syrian people, saying Damascus had not kept its troop withdrawal pledge and had increased the violence.

Annan, at a news conference in Tehran on Wednesday, urged Assad's long-time ally Iran to help resolve the violence and warned of "unimaginable consequences" if it worsened further.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, quoted by state news agency IRNA, urged an end to violence but accused the NATO powers of expansionist ambitions in the Middle East and said Tehran's Syrian ally should not be put under pressure.

"NATO is not ashamed to say it wants to dominate the region and is trying to extend its domination eastward," IRNA said, quoting Ahmadinejad as insisting: "The implementation of any plan in Syria should be free of pressures and interference, and all violence in that country should be stopped."

Iran has unstintingly backed Syria, the only Arab nation to support Iran in its 1980-88 war with Iraq and the conduit for Iranian arms to Lebanon's Shi'ite Muslim Hezbollah movement.

Syria, where Assad's Shi'ite-rooted Alawite minority dominates a Sunni Muslim majority, has become an arena for a sectarian-tinged regional contest between Shi'ite Iran and Sunni Arab rivals aligned with the West and led by Saudi Arabia.

Assad's forces have killed more than 9,000 people in the past year, according to a U.N. estimate. Damascus says rebels have killed more than 2,600 soldiers and security personnel.

BT super-charges fiber-optic broadband today, for the lucky few who can get it

Image
Excuse our sour grapes, but the fortunate proportion of Britons with access to BT's fibre fiber-optic broadband will find everything much faster from today at no extra cost. Infinity 1 customers now have an upstream of (as always) "up to" 9.5Mbps, up from 1.9Mbps yesterday, but downstream remains fixed at 38Mbps. Meanwhile, those with Infinity 2 have seen their speeds doubled with 19Mbps up and 76Mbps down as the company continues its jockeying with Virgin Media to remain top dog in the speedy broadband stakes. Those of us who aren't in an area that's been earmarked for the fiber-optic rollout will have to make do with checking the property websites and wishing.

[Thanks, Craig]

DIY Home Improvement | Easy Specs

Of course, nearly everyone as at some point tried DIY home improvement. But does it increase the potential selling value of a home after? According to interior designer Scot McAllister:

?Home improvements, their costs and their resultant profits are not a precise science. For this reason, it?s hard to specifically quantify what works and what doesn?t. For example, laminate flooring has undergone a popularity nosedive due to the market being flooded by so many photographic plastic options.?

McAllister continues with:

?Their cheapness has created a stigma ? and even expensive options have become tarred with the same brush. When replacement costs start ticking away in buyers? heads you don?t need to be Carol Vorderman to understand that offers will be reduced.?

DIY projects that increase the value of a home

To raise the value of a house, you need to carry out DIY home improvement projects that will definitely withstand the test of time.

For example, if you do have laminate flooring you can install vintage wooden doors.

?

To install wooden doors, you would need a screwdriver, a pair of thick gloves, 4-inch door-frame screws and a hammer. To remove the door from the frame, simply unscrew the hinges from the door frame.

Get that old door off

Once the hinges come off, slowly ease the door from frame itself, taking care not to damage the edges. You would want to of course, preserve the old door for use later on. Home values go up when front doors are beautiful- so choose the replacement door properly.

Another interesting DIY home improvement project that can raise the value of your home is replacing worn out bathroom tiles.

If the tiles are more than a decade old and you plan on selling within the next few months, now would be the opportune time to replace the tiles.

Replacing worn out tiles

The replacement of worn out bathroom tiles is a bit more difficult than the first project, Of course, the tiles in the bathroom can no longer be recovered completely intact, so make sure you can dispose of the broken tiles immediately afterward.

Designer tiles can be put in place of the old ones. Designer tiles employ a variety of new colors and textures that will naturally emphasize the dimensions of the bathroom.

?

For this project you would need a few sacks for tile disposal, a large chisel or a crow bar and a mallet or an equivalent. If possible, work the tiles when they are wet as this reduces friction and lessens dust clouds during working. Drive the crowbar against the underside of the tiles and slowly work around the tiles.

Ease the tiles off the floor, making sure that none are left behind. Smooth white cement may be used to install the new designer tiles after the bathroom floor has been re-leveled.

?

Justin Ray, an interior designer for the TV show How Not to Decorate warns people:

?A bad DIY project will always detract from the resale value. Anything that looks unprofessional, such as a badly-fitted kitchen or uneven plastering, will get buyers wondering.?

Quotes in Press Releases Make Marketing Mix Magic | Small ...

Quotes are incredibly useful and powerful. This simple truth applies to the press releases incorporated in your marketing mix.

In addition to having an interesting news angle or memorable title, a key element of a press release is the quote. Quotes that support the focus of a press release enhance its message. Whether quotes are from people in the industry, others who have experienced what the piece is about or even those from famous individuals that inspire action, these personal touches can drive a message home. When press releases are included in their marketing mix, businesses can use quotes to their advantage in the form of statements from CEOs, testimonials from satisfied customers and more.

In other words, quotes are the added texture that anchors the facts in a press release in a reader?s mind.? In fact, if your audience doesn?t remember the majority of the information in your release, chances are, they will remember the message of the quote ? especially if it?s compelling.

Check out these five reasons why quotes should be included in press releases:

  1. Quotation marks and quotes catch readers? attention, particularly if they are skimming instead of reading thoroughly.? One powerful way to take advantage of this eye-catching element ? give quotes their own paragraphs for greater impact.
  2. Direct quotes draw attention to something interesting or drive an important point home better than objective text.? An expert?s quote can cut to the chase and give a unique viewpoint to information.? Would you rather read an instructional manual about calf roping or get tips from an actual cowboy?
  3. Including quotes puts the vivid language people use when they speak freely into what might otherwise be a dull story.? Quotes provide a flavor to content that objective language can?t.? A passionate spokesperson can give your message added magnetism.
  4. From the writer?s standpoint, using direct quotes reduces the risk of misreporting what was said through an indirect quote.? The easiest way to present information correctly is to attribute facts to the best source.? Direct quotes also let readers know you aren?t reconfiguring someone?s words.
  5. Direct quotes let the reader know precisely how the ideas and thoughts were presented by the original speaker, allowing the reader to make up their own mind about the speaker?s tone.? The language of quotes are spotlights on how not just how the speaker feels about the topic but also how well he knows it.? An informed source adds credibility to your content.

Quotes are very important for press releases. They enhance the message and can communicate points that might have otherwise been lost or overlooked by the reader. Quotes should be included in press releases whenever possible because they have great power to persuade.

Miracle Cancer Drug Found | TopNews United States

It has been reported that a drug which has the potential of treating almost 90% of all the cancer types has been tested for the very first time on human. If the drug proves successful then it could help in reducing the mortality rate occurring due to cancer.

The new drug targets particular protein called MUC1, which found present in almost all type of cancers. The common cancers like breast cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer and stomach cancer are also treatable by the newly found miracle drug.

The researchers studying the drug have informed that the vaccine works by encouraging the immune system to detect the cancer cells and to treat them. Initially, the drug was tested on mice, suffering with breast cancer. When the drug was administered to the mice dramatic results were experienced by the researchers.

The researchers of Vaxil Biotheraputics and Tel Aviv University have been studying the drug. They have noted that the drug can show positive outcomes in patients suffering with cancer. In the human trial, ten patients suffering with blood cancer as known as multiple myeloma were provided with the vaccination.

The trail was conducted at the Hadassah Medical Centre located in Jerusalem. It has been informed by the researchers of the Vaxil Biotheraputics that seven patients out of ten have showed positive outcome. There immune system has strengthened to fight against the cancer cells.

Dr. Caitlin Palframan of Breakthrough Breast Cancer was reported as saying ?This exciting new approach could lead to treatments for breast cancer patients who have few options. It also opens up the possibility of vaccinating high-risk women against breast cancer in the future?. It is hoped that the drug would soon be made available for medical use and thus would help in saving lives from cancer.

Writing A Thesis Statement | Beneficial Function

If you are working on short essay or high level academic assignments such as dissertations, research paper and their thesis statement could certainly be very difficult to prepare. Thesis statement is the core of any assignment and successful thesis statement describes the main objectives of the task and several aspects to manage, situations, and design the entire argument. Without thesis statement, your project might seem weak and boring to the readers. There are some basic steps which show the correct way how to deal with a thesis statement.

First of all, students have to understand what it actually is. Thesis statements convey statements or arguments to their reader that they desire to write in the paper. This provides as a map by explaining readers the way of their statements or scrutinize and how they can understand the significance of subject.

Students have to know the right place to put thesis statement in their paper. Due to the part it plays, they come into view at the starting of entire paper, generally at the last of opening subsection or where in introductory part. Even though many persons find in the last of introductory paragraph, its place could consist of the number of aspects for instance, the length of introduction which they require earliest they could start their task or their paper length.

Students have to know about its length or word limit. It should be two or three sentences and also understandable and succinct that helps to reader to recognize the subject matter and the way of their paper, plus their attitude towards the subject.

Students should make their thesis statement narrow. They must place the single matter in big depth in order their statements could be completely helped in entire body of assignment.

It performs big work at concentrating the task?s point into one sentence. They are straight and responsive about the question by providing methods to comprehend the topic. In reality, sighting the thesis statement as an answer to their question paper discovers is an immense structure with that to make their task.

Begin with the question. Despite how difficult the topic is, about thesis could be written by replying the question.

Pursue a formal framework. Knowing the fundamental methods can not just keep their thesis within suitable length but this can also help students observe how their all points must be prepared.

Writing down the beginning thesis can show the correct path and compel them to consider about this, develop their more thoughts, and make the text clear of their paper. They will be capable of considering their thesis understandably, obviously, and succinctly.

Scrutinize their thesis statement one time students consider they have the last, or writing and report. The argument is to ensure they avoid making mistakes or faults which could reason to fail their assignment. To get the best thought of what to perform and what to shun, think about the subsequent pieces of advice. The students should not make an outline their thesis as a question because its job is to answer and solve the question or problem, not to inquire. A thesis statement is not a list.

Deadly March Tornadoes Were First Billion-Dollar Disaster of 2012

tornado damage Tornado damage in Henryville, Ind., after a tornado swept through the small community on March 2, 2012. Image: Michael Raphael/FEMA

A swarm of tornadoes that tore through the Midwest and Southeast in early March has earned the grim title of the nation's first billion-dollar weather disaster of 2012.

From March 2 through the early hours of March 3, 132 tornadoes were reported across nine states. Although those numbers are preliminary, and will undoubtedly decrease once overlapping reports are eliminated, their aftermath was devastating, causing more than $1.5 billion in damage and killing 40 people.

The storms killed four people in Ohio, but they took the greatest toll in Indiana, killing 13, and Kentucky, where 23 people died.

The costly disaster follows on the heels of a record-breaking year for devastation wrought by the vagaries of the weather and longer-term climate conditions. Last year, the United States experienced 14 separate events that caused $1 billion or more in damage. Five of those events were tornado outbreaks.

Adding it up
Last year's costliest weather disaster was the late April 2011 tornado outbreak, which produced an estimated 343 tornadoes across Midwestern and southern states, killing 321 people and causing some $10.2 billion in damage. [The Top 5 Deadliest Tornado Years in U.S. History]

This year's early March tornado outbreak was significant for a number of reasons, according to Jake Crouch, a climatologist with the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), and co-author of a new State of the Climate report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released today (April 9).

Atmospheric conditions that made for unseasonably warm temperatures in late February and early March?across huge swaths of the United States allowed warm, moist air up to areas where it could collide with cold, drier air, Crouch said, a key ingredient for severe weather.

"And when we get a storm system moving through, interacting with high temperatures and moisture, it creates instability in the atmosphere and that favors these large outbreaks," Crouch told OurAmazingPlanet.

He said the timing was unusual, though. "We don't expect to have large tornado outbreaks with high human loss this early in the season," Crouch said.

Overall, the preliminary count for March tornadoes is 223. Once numbers are confirmed, the month could be the most active March ever recorded, according to the NCDC report.

Putting it in context
However, Greg Carbin, warning coordination meteorologist at NOAA's Storm Prediction Center, cautions that numbers alone don't tell the full story.

"If you look at the history of significant tornado activity, there are a large number of outbreaks that occur in March and April," Carbin told OurAmazingPlanet.

And they have claimed many lives before, he said. March tornado outbreaks killed 40 people in 1994, 64 people in 1984, 58 people in 1966 and 209 people in 1952.

In addition, Carbin said, because of population increases and better technology, researchers have gotten a lot better at seeing tornadoes, so weaker twisters that would have escaped a count 50 years ago can make for higher tornado numbers.

Carbin did say the early March outbreak was indeed a dramatic event. However, he said that it's difficult to qualify just how dramatic, given that tornadoes are, by their very nature, what Carbin calls "atypical events."

"When people talk about what's normal for tornado activity, well, there really isn't a "normal" for tornado activity because it is an atypical atmospheric event," he said. "That makes it very difficult to quantify what normal is."

Bill McKibben: It's Time for Interfaith Moral Action on Climate Change

There are lots of types of people who have been taking action on climate change over the last several years: environmentalists (of course), students and young people, community-based groups, labor activists, indigenous peoples, Appalachian and Gulf Coast residents, ranchers and more. Among them, importantly, have been people from the many different denominations that make up the broad religious community in the United States.

It was personally inspiring to me when several dozen people of faith took action last August, getting arrested at the White House protesting the Keystone XL pipeline. And it is inspiring that some of those people, as well as many more, have joined together to organize five days of faith-based activities calling for action on climate change in Washington, D.C. April 22 to 26. The Interfaith Moral Action on Climate Change is playing a key role in organizing and connecting these activities.

It's very important that an interfaith voice -- Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Baha'i, Hindu, and Native American -- is taking action in this way. A spiritual voice is urgently needed to underline the fact that global warming is already causing human anguish and mortality in our nation and abroad, and much more will occur in the future without rapid action. There is an urgent need to stop subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, dramatically reduce wasted energy, and significantly shift our power supplies from oil, coal, and natural gas to wind, solar, geothermal, and other renewable energy sources.

As stated in IMAC's Call to Action:

Virtually all the world's religious and spiritual traditions proclaim that we have a moral obligation to be good stewards of the Earth and all of its creatures and processes. To disrupt the climate that is the cornerstone of all life and to squander the extraordinary abundance of life, diversity, and beauty of the planet is a moral failure of the first order.

What better time to bring this voice forward in unified action than during the week that includes Earth Day? I will be there on Tuesday, April 24 for a day of activities that begins with an early morning vigil at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial by the Potomac River. At 10:30 a.m. there will be a multi-faith service at N.Y. Avenue Presbyterian Church, followed by a religious procession down Pennsylvania Avenue to Capitol Hill. There, a large report card for Congress with an "F" for failure will be presented, underling Congress' collective failure to serve and protect the American people, all peoples, and Mother Earth from the dangers of climate change. Educational visits with key congressional members will take place.

I hope others will visit interfaithactiononclimatechange.org and make plans to be part of this important, new, collaborative faith initiative.

Car Repair Indianapolis, IN - Auto Body Shop ASE Certification ...

Last updated 1 hour 2 minutes ago

Getting in an accident?is a taxing experience. If you are ever in a car wreck, your vehicle will probably require both body and mechanical repairs to restore it to its original condition.?Below is?why it?s better to go to a quality auto repair shop that offers both services under one roof:

Convenience
Many cars that have suffered collisions require both body and mechanical repair. For convenience?s sake, it?s important to choose an auto repair center you can count on to perform all necessary repairs to your vehicle. You don?t want to be without a car for longer than absolutely necessary. Instead, go to one place that can perform all of?the repairs you need.

ASE-Certified Quality
It?s important to go to an auto repair shop that knows how to expertly restore a vehicle.? A good repair shop will make your car look even better than it did before the accident. Because of the extensive process of certification, Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified shops offer the best auto repair and service available. To become ASE certified, technicians must pass a job-related skills?ASE exam every five years and have at least two years of relevant work experience. Going to a?certified?auto shop will help your car maintain its resale value.

Value
Aside from the convenience and quality of going to a full-service, ASE-certified auto repair shop, you will also benefit from affordable prices for top-tier car care. Going to more than one shop requires you to pay more than one labor fee, transport your car between two locations, and get acquainted with two different shops and their services. If you are paying for repairs out of pocket, a full-service auto shop is an especially economical way to go.

For ASE-certified, full-service auto repair in the Indianapolis area, come to Hubler Express Collision. We have five central Indiana locations to serve you whenever you might need us. Call us at (888) 766-9720 for more information.

Netflix explains its recommendation system, can't find a reason for Adam Sandler's last movie
In case you've been wondering why Netflix tends to recommend the movies it does, there's a post on the company's Tech Blog breaking down the various levels of its system. Remember the Netflix Prize contest? Teams of researchers produced competing algorithms capable of more accurately predicting how members would rate movies, but while some of the early winning efforts are still in use, the million dollar solution was never implemented because the potential gains were too small to justify the engineering effort needed. Additionally, while Netflix still hasn't implemented individual profiles for household members yet, the blog indicates it does try to recommend something for everyone, seeking both accuracy and diversity -- which may explain some of more out there picks in our personal "recommended for you" list. Where available (read: outside the US) Facebook integration plays a part too, as well as a variety of information used to find movies similar to those previously viewed. The proof of how all these parts come together is ultimately judged by the viewers, so while we wait for part two of the post with more data to pore over -- is Netflix managing to accurately pull any flicks you want to watch out of its catalog?

Nonexistent LG phone to compete against nonexistent Samsung phone

LG

Although Samsung hasn't yet announced a Galaxy S III, and we still have no reliable information on what the device will be like, it seems LG may already be preparing a direct competitor. Korean news site DDaily has the first reports on a device dubbed the "LG D1L", which is described as a "Galaxy S3 killer."

Citing anonymous sources within LG, the site reports that the "D1L" will include a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 chip, a 4.7-inch 720p display and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. None of that's  particularly surprising, but the fact that LG has an unannounced high-end handset is a little odd. As far as we know, the manufacturer's new flagship device is the Optimus 4X HD, a quad-core phone which we saw at MWC in February.

In any case, it shouldn't surprise anyone to see that LG, Samsung's main Korean competitor, is preparing a rival handset. For what it's worth, the D1L is rumored to launch in May, around the same time as the rest of LG's 2012 line-up.

Is Bankruptcy A Good Idea? Does Bankruptcy Filing Make Sense ...

For many consumers, bankruptcy is seen as a drastic way to get out of debt once and for all. While filing a petition with the bankruptcy court makes sense for some people, there are better ways of getting out of debt. For example, many American consumers have been told that going through the bankruptcy process is a good way for them to ?wipe the slate clean? or completely erase all their debts. While this is true for some situations, it may surprise you to learn that bankruptcy will not help you as much as you thought it would.

Is Bankruptcy Right For You?

Before deciding if bankruptcy is right for you, it is important to understand exactly what filing for personal bankruptcy means. If you choose to file for bankruptcy, a judge will look at your personal financial situation and decide what bills you should pay. This is known as a means test. In most cases, the judge follows the guidelines set forth by your state of residence. Since these rules vary from state to state, many people choose to hire a bankruptcy attorney to help them through the filing process.

After the initial court filing, the process typically takes about six months to a year to complete, but it can take much longer in very complicated cases. After reviewing the case, the judge will decide which of your debts can be completely discharged, which debts can be discharged with conditions, and which debts you will still need to pay.

Discharge Your Unsecured Debts With Bankruptcy ? If You Qualify

In general, a bankruptcy filing will help people who have unsecured debts to have these debts fully discharged ? only if you qualify for Chapter 7 liquidation. These bills include credit card debt, personal loans, payday loans, and medical debt. When these specific types of debts are registered while filing for bankruptcy they are usually completely discharged. This means that you will not have to make payments on these bills ever again.

Many people cannot qualify for Chapter 7 liquidation because they cannot pass the means test ? you can thank the major credit card companies for those rules.

Another class of debts known as secured debts, however, are trickier to discharge or get of rid through a bankruptcy. This class of debt includes mortgages, car loans, business equipment loans, and any other loan that has an asset attached to it. In general, a bankruptcy court will usually make you give up or forfeit the asset that is backing one of these loans in order for the debt to be discharged. While this can be a good option if you are currently underwater on your house or upside down on your car note, it may be a bad choice if you have some equity in these assets.

Debts Not Discharged Through Bankruptcy

It is important for you to realize that there are some debts that by law can never be discharged during a bankruptcy. Student loan debt, alimony, federal tax debt, and back child support payments cannot be discharged during a bankruptcy. People who have these types of loans are often told to look to other sources for debt relief.

Odds are, however, that you have a combination of all three of these types of debt. This means that filing for bankruptcy will clear some of your debts, but you will still be required to make payments on other debts.

The Many Costly Consequences Of Filing Bankruptcy

Of course, there are several negative consequences of going through a bankruptcy. The first one that you?ll probably notice is that it will completely wreck your credit score for years. Filing for bankruptcy is one of the most damaging things you can do to your credit. Expect your score to drop by at least two hundred points immediately after filing.

People who already have extremely low credit scores, however, do not see this as much of a problem. If your FICO score is already below 500, there isn?t much more damage a bankruptcy can do. The term ?bankruptcy? will appear on your credit report, however, and will not be removed for seven years.

The term ?bankruptcy? on a credit report has the potential to scare away banks, insurance companies, and even potential employers. If you?re currently working or hoping to work in the finance industry or any money-related field, it will become extremely difficult to find a job with a bankruptcy on your credit report. Many security positions will refuse to hire people who have ever filed for bankruptcy as well.

For these reasons, filing bankruptcy should only be used as a last resort. If you?re thinking about filing for bankruptcy, look into your options with credit counseling and debt settlement first as less severe alternatives. Companies that offer these services can often help you to have your loan balances reduced and your payments restructured so that you can afford your debt again. In addition, the effects on your credit will not be nearly as harsh.

Call 1-800 CUT BILLS today or fill out the form to get more information on debt settlement and how it can help you to avoid bankruptcy but get better debt relief. Yes, you can get better savings on your debts with debt negotiation and settlement compared to bankruptcy. Plus, the direct and indirect costs are much lower than bankruptcy court. Investing in nanotechnology: What VCs, angels and strategic ...

As nanotechnology finds new uses ranging from engineering to medicine, a growing number of early stage companies are forming to bring new nanotech innovation into those markets.

But nanotech companies are clamoring for financing at a time when investor purse strings remain tight. Some investors are showing interest in nanotechnology investments, but that interest doesn?t mean that they approach these deals with any less caution. Nanotechnology investing was the topic of a panel discussion at the NanoTech Commercialization Conference in Durham, North Carolina. Here?s what two venture capitalists, a strategic investor and an angel investor had to say.

Focus. Harris & Harris (NASDAQ:TINY), a publicly traded venture firm that focuses on early stage nanotechnology investments, has done deals with a lot of companies that have platform technologies, said Doug Jamison, the firm?s CEO. But that broad potential can work against an early stage company if a technology?s application is not clear.?Finding the focus is probably the most difficult thing and where we?ve failed the most,? Jamison said. John Glushik, general partner at Durham venture capital firm Intersouth Partners, said his firm sees a lot of platform technologies that did not clearly show where the technology would go. A company needs to define not only the market need, said Syngenta Ventures Vice President Carol Marino, but also how its technology addresses that need.

Angel investor, strategic investor or venture capital? Angels investors are typically the first step for early stage companies who are seeking outside funding. Martin Sinozich, president of the Piedmont Angel Network, said that he looks to see what a company needs beyond what angels can support. Angels will need to see that value is being created along the way because that?s what will get the company to the next stage. Glushik said that although Intersouth has traditionally followed angels, the firm is doing more deals alongside angels and may jump in before angels. Venture capitalists will be mindful of potential acquirers of a company and Glushik reiterated that VCs ?want that universe to be as big as possible.? A large company such as Syngenta can take a different approach to investing in early stage nanotechnology companies. Syngenta can have a longer-time horizon for a developing technology because it doesn?t have limited partners to answer to, Marino said. But she added that Syngenta looks for focus and fit. Syngenta will do a deal if it supports the company?s R&D.

Proof of concept. Quickly. Glushik said that venture capital firms hearing nanotech investment pitches are also hearing pitches from Internet, consumer-focused companies that require less money. And that smaller amount of financing will last longer at an Internet company than it will at a nanotechnology company. Nanotech companies need to show that they can get to proof of concept quickly. Jamison said that Harris & Harris is always looking ahead. There must be clearly defined milestones that create value in the technology.

Management. Glushik said that many of the companies that present to Intersouth spend most of their time explaining the technology and less on how the company plans to bring that technology to market. The firm will assume that the technology works. But as an investor, Glushik said he?s looking for more than the technology. Intersouth is interested in the management team of a company and that team?s ability to bring new technology to the market. Intersouth will look at early stage companies who don?t yet have revenue, Glushik said. But the management team is key.

Congress: GSA violated its gift awards limits

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The General Services Administration developed an employee awards program that spent more than $438,000 over four years, far exceeding the agency's per-gift limit of $99, congressional investigators reported Friday.

Investigators for the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee said the "Hats Off Program" initially gave out items of nominal value. Over time, the awards became iPods, digital cameras, GPS devices and other electronics. The spending occurred from 2007 through 2010, the report said.

The GSA, the real estate agency for federal buildings, said in a statement that the program has ended. "Operations have been suspended pending a continuing top down review of all spending," the statement said.

The agency has been under fire from Congress after its inspector general reported this week that GSA lavishly spent $820,000 for a Las Vegas conference in 2010. The head of the agency resigned, two deputies were fired and other employees were suspended. The Transportation panel and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee are just starting investigations of the agency's wasteful spending.

The Transportation panel said the inspector general learned of the awards program from an agency of the Department of Homeland Security. The Federal Protective Service initially said that about 40 iPods with an estimated value of $8,000 were reported stolen. Further investigation revealed some 115 of the devices valued at more than $20,000 were unaccounted for and may have been stolen.

In 2009, the average gift per employee in the agency's Public Buildings Service was $328, the Transportation Committee said. Top awards went to people who were involved with administering the program.

Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the Transportation panel, said, "The Hats Off award program degenerated into a taxpayer funded giveaway where employees handed out iPods to their office buddies for almost any reason. Not surprisingly, the IG (inspector general's) report identified the supervisors who ran the Hats Off store as the biggest winners of taxpayer swag."

Mica added that the agency awarded a regional commissioner responsible for the Las Vegas conference and the excessive awards a $9,000 cash bonus after the official received inspector general briefings on both the conference and the Hats Off Program.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said her committee will hold a hearing on the GSA report Wednesday.
